WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Council of Bishops (COB) of The United Methodist Church has named the Rev. Maidstone Mulenga as its inaugural Director of Communications.

The Rev. Mulenga currently serves as Assistant to the Bishop and Director of Connectional Ministries in the Baltimore-Washington Conference (BWC). He has served as editor of Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference Daily Christian Advocate and as secretary of the Committee on Correlation and Editorial Revision, the team that edits the Book of Discipline.

He has previously served as director of communications for the Upper New York Annual Conference and editor of various newspapers in Michigan and New York states. He holds degrees in journalism, computer-mediated communication and divinity from universities in Michigan, New York states and Zambia, his native country.

In his new role, Mulenga will manage and direct the COB’s internal and external communications and will oversee leading the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy for the Council of Bishops.

Mulenga will assume the new role on April 1 but will work with the BWC leadership on a transition period until end of appointment year on June 30. BWC Resident Bishop LaTrelle Easterling is expected to announce Mulenga’s replacement soon.

Mulenga will be part of the permanent, staffed COB office in the United Methodist Building in Washington D.C.

In making the announcement, Bishop Bruce Ough, president of the Council of Bishops, noted that Mulenga was an accomplished communicator who will “be able to help us tell the story of the work of the Council of Bishops as the denomination continues to be in the forefront of transforming the world through its mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ.”

About the Council of Bishops

The COB is made up of all active and retired bishops of The United Methodist Church. The COB provides temporal and spiritual leadership to the denomination and is directed “to speak to the Church and from the Church to the world and to give leadership in the quest for Christian unity and interreligious relationships.”

Bishops are elected by one of the five jurisdictional conferences held every four years in the United States and by the central conferences outside of the U.S.

Bishops in the U.S. are consecrated at the jurisdictional conference and are expected to report for work in their new areas on Sept. 1. There are 46 active bishops in the United States and 20 outside of the United States.

To provide stronger leadership across the denomination, United Methodist bishops recently voted to lengthen the term of their president to two years and establish a permanent, staffed office in Washington D.C.

The Executive Committee includes President: Bruce R. Ough; President Designate: Kenneth H. Carter, Jr.; Secretary: Cynthia Fierro Harvey; Executive Secretary: Marcus Matthews; Ecumenical Officer: B. Michael Watson; and Immediate Past President: Warner H. Brown Jr.
