Ethel Lucille Ankeny
Ethel Lucille Ankeny, 84, the wife of the Rev. Edwin Ankeny, a retired Elder and district superintendent, died at home Dec. 25, 2018, after a lengthy illness. A service of remembrance was held Jan. 5, 2019, at Catonsville UMC with the Rev. Mark Waddell officiating.
Ethel Lucille Webber was born to the late Earl and Mary Bixler Webber Aug. 7, 1934, in Ickesburg, Penn., the only daughter with five older brothers.
She and Ed Ankeny were married in 1959 at the beginning of his ministerial career in Pennsylvania. In 1961 they moved to the Baltimore-Washington Conference where he became pastor of Cedar Grove in Parkton for four years. From 1965-68, he served Sandy Mount UMC, then the Hillsdale-Chatsworth Charge in Baltimore until 1974. From 1974-1983, his appointment was to Eastport UMC in Annapolis, and 1983-1996 to Mt. Vernon Place in Baltimore. In 1996, he was appointed Superintendent of the Baltimore-North District, which he served until his retirement in 2004.
Throughout these ministries, Ethel Ankeny served along with her husband in each church. God gifted her with the ability to talk with anyone, said her family, an asset that served well in the churches. There were no strangers in her world. She was a nurse at North Arundel Hospital for a number of years and a woman of faith. Her family attests to her being a loving wife, a proud mother and a fiercely devoted grandmother.
She enjoyed finding sand dollars at Wrightsville Beach, N.C., where the family went for summer vacations.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her five older brothers.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, the Rev. Edwin Ankeny; her children, Cherie (Ankeny) Miller and husband Chris Miller, and Jerry Ankeny and his wife Anne-Liesse Ankeny; and two grandchildren.
