A Post-Election Message from Bishop Easterling

Posted by Bishop LaTrelle Miller Easterling on

You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
will say to the Lord,
"My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust."

-- Psalm 91: 1-2

Beloved:

It is the day after another election in our country, another opportunity for us to exercise our civic duty and elect the next President of our United States. We express ourselves through our vote, our intentions and hopes and dreams for our nation. Unfortunately, our process often creates an atmosphere of winners and losers. Perhaps this perception was exacerbated during this unusually partisan political season. But, we are the United States of America, hopefully all striving toward a common purpose of peace, prosperity, and justice for all.

I am aware that some within our nation have reacted strongly to the election's outcome. This is true within our conference as well. I have had conversation with persons who are wrestling with what it means for our future, for their personal safety, or the safety of those whom they love. Whatever our particular political persuasion, I hope that we are gracious enough to allow for the feelings and reactions of others. If there is celebration, may we make room for that celebration. If there is concern, may we receive that concern with sincerity and compassion. Some of our brothers and sisters are genuinely afraid. As fellow Christ-followers, it is my prayer that their concern is met with pastoral care and nurture. We need to understand that is okay to say we are not okay. If appropriate for your community, you might consider having a prayer service or other gathering to open sacred space for prayer, listening, or just a holy presence.

As you have heard me say before, the eagle never flies higher than the cross. Our nation's politics do not supersede the work of God or the Holy Spirit. Our grounding is found at the foot of the cross, and our hope is built on Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. We are united, even as we experience this election differently. We are united in our faith, our love of God, and our love for one another. Amen and amen.

May Peace Be Yours,
Bishop LaTrelle Easterling

The Sun Will Rise
By LaTrelle Easterling

Yes, the sun will rise, it always does
and as it rises, there are those who…
Are food insecure
Live in fear
Are rejected
Get bullied
Are trafficked
Have no where to turn
Suffer under ‘isms’ …

Who will be there for them?
Who will speak out?
Who will walk beside them?
Who will advocate with them?

The sun will rise tomorrow, it always does,
And as it rises, there are those who …
Hate
Hurt
Plot
Scheme
Attack
Harm
Cheat
Kill

Who will speak up?
Who will attempt to reason with them?
Who will dare to challenge them?
Who will prophesy that their hearts must be softened?

The sun will rise tomorrow, it always does.
And as it rises, the People of God will need to be
The People of God.
