Disability Awareness Sunday

Sunday, February 02, 2025

The first Sunday in February is Disability Awareness Sunday in the Baltimore-Washington Conference. While a full-out special service is ideal, the reality is that Sunday competes with other church plans. To help church leaders incorporate Disability Awareness Sunday have people with disabilities help lead worship. The BWC Disability Commission offers resources. Some of them are below.

  • A variety of bulletin inserts to choose from
  • Hymn selections by composers with disabilities
  • Choose one or more Scripture lessons (read from the NIrV, a translation that uses a third-grade reading level which is often used with people with cognitive delays)
    • Psalm 139:13-14 - People with disabilities ARE ALSO wonderfully made
    • 1 Samuel 9:3-7 - King David took in Jonathan's son who had a physical disability
    • Luke 14:12-14 - Jesus' parable emphasized on disability inclusion
  • Social Media Communications
  • Church announcements
    • Announce it is Disability Awareness Sunday
    • With prayerful consideration, announce your church will create an Accessibility Coordinator position (contact Rev. Leo Yates for assistance - it's easy!)
  • Joni and Friends has a children's curriculum list
