Across the Connection: In Brief

Last year on Earth Day, a group of United Methodist general agencies announced a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to do so through a lens of justice and equity. See their progress report.

Members to the 238th session of the Baltimore-Washington Conference will consider a number of issues facing the church and culture when they meet June 1-3 in a time of holy conferencing.

An online Pre-Conference Briefing on the information that will be considered by members will be held Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Members will vote on six resolutions that include:

  • Supporting the move to make Salem Hispanic UMC a mission congregation so that it can receive funding and other resources that enable it to be an agent for change and wellbeing in their west Baltimore neighborhood.
  • Establishing a conference team to assess the disposition of proceeds from the sale of closed Black church property that includes members of Black Methodists for Church Renewal and Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st
  • Endorsing the passage of the Christmas Covenant at the next General Conference session in order to transform existing central conferences around the globe into regional conferences and create a US regional conference.
  • Celebrating the 250thanniversary of Lovely Lane UMC in Baltimore, the “Mother Church of Methodism.”
  • Adding a seat to the BWC’s Wealth Equity team that focuses on housing security, justice and advocacy.
  • Encouraging a more robust discussion in local churches on the science related to global warming.

At the Pre-Conference Briefing, members will also hear a presentation on the proposed 2023 conference budget of $18,223,006 and other stewardship matters facing local churches.

An agenda of the Annual Conference session is online. The plenary sessions and worship services, which will be conducted at Glen Mar UMC in Ellicott City, will be live streamed. Bishop LaTrelle Easterling will preach at opening worship at 2 p.m. on June 1; the Rev. Frankie Revell will preach at the Memorial Service of Remembrance on June 2 at 1 p.m.; and Bishop Peter Weaver will preach at Ordination at 6 p.m. on June 3.
