Board of Church and Society

The Board of Church and Society equips local congregations so that they can serve their communities and bring healing in the midst of unrest, justice in the midst of brokenness and love in the midst of hate. The board also pursues justice, through advocacy, for the transformation of the world. Its members work closely with the Conference advocacy consultant to determine legislative priorities in Maryland and endeavors to be aware of priorities in Washington D.C., West Virginia, and the federal government so that they can lobby on behalf of issues endorsed by the church through the Book of Resolution.

According to the denomination’s Book of Resolutions, the Church’s guidebook for social action, “The United Methodist Church believes God’s love for the world is an active and engaged love, a love seeking justice and liberty. We cannot just be observers. So we care enough about people’s lives to risk interpreting God’s love, to take a stand, to call each of us into a response, no matter how controversial or complex.”
