Assistant General Secretary - Campus Ministry
Division of Higher Education
The successful candidate will oversee the promotion, interpretation, and resourcing of campus ministries and college chaplaincies for The United Methodist Church. Additionally, the incumbent will provide staff support to associations of United Methodist campus ministers and chaplains, technical assistance and consultative services to annual conference and campus ministry boards, and leadership in the ecumenical arena related to campus ministry. This work includes oversight of the planning, managing, and evaluating of projects related to campus ministry that are contained in the GBHEM strategic plan or assigned by the division's Associate General Secretary. Responsibilities also include providing appropriate support for professional organizations related to campus ministry (i.e., NCMA, UMCMA, NACUC, AUCRA, etc.) by insuring that United Methodist interests in campus ministry are represented and, where appropriate, staff support is provided for meetings and conferences. The incumbent will coordinate relationships with ecumenical partners in campus ministry by presenting a coherent United Methodist voice of support for ecumenical work and providing an interface between ecumenical campus ministry and the United Methodist Church. The incumbent will also manage work related to the development of resources for campus ministries including preparation of appropriate resources, identification and engagement of additional individuals to produce resources, and supervision of GBHEM staff related to development and distribution of materials and resources. The Assistant General Secretary will provide leadership to the United Methodist Church in articulating the theological and practical role of campus ministry. This involves writing and speaking to bishops and annual conference leaders, as well as encouraging others to promote the role of campus ministry in the United Methodist Church. The incumbent will supervise the work of the Director of Student Ministries and Vocational Discernment, in cooperation with the Division of Ordained Ministry, to ensure that cross divisional work to develop young leadership is supported with quality national programs for college students. The incumbent will also have responsibilities related to the implementation of GBHEM's strategic plan.
Requirements: Masters degree in theology required; ordination in The United Methodist Church required; doctoral degree preferred; minimum of four years work experience in campus ministry or college chaplaincy a must; experience working in a multi-cultural environment; minimum of 2 years supervisory experience required; public relations and project management experience; Spanish, French, or Portuguese fluency a plus; knowledge of The United Methodist Church and its mission and structure; ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously; an understanding of the work of higher education essential; strong people skills; ability to analyze complex interpersonal and systemic issues; strong organizational skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; good computer skills; a commitment to diversity of ideas and cultures; strong leadership and management skills; ability to think creatively and problem solve; excellent attention to detail; good decision-making skills; willingness and ability to be an "on the job learner" and think strategically; ability to build relationships and form networks; ability to communicate and work with colleagues in a team approach. Director of Extenstion Ministry and Pastoral Care - Division of Ordained Ministry
The incumbent will serve as contact person for extension ministry policy and information including work with professional pastoral care organizations and endorser networks to ensure standards for professional certification are understood and fit within the United Methodist understanding of ministry, writing reports and documents related to endorsement and extenision ministry and responding to annual reports from endorsed chaplains and pastoral counselors, and collaboration with the GBHEM Enlistment and Candidacy team through participation on the Advisory Committee on Candidacy and Clergy Assessment (ACCCCA) in their work with the DOM Candidacy and Enlistment Office regarding assessment processes and development of resources for candidates and clergy. The incumbent will also provide pastoral care for the endorsed community including counseling, individual spiritual retreats, and participation in retreat and convocation program design teams. The incumbent will supervise the Journey of Shalom program for returning chaplains and their spouses and supervise/coordinate regular visits with endorsed persons and seminary communities through the volunteer visitors program and staff site visits. The incumbent will chair the DOM Extension Ministry/ABLC consituency team and have responsibility for providing input for the UMEA portion of the budget. Board activities and assignments related to implementation of GBHEM's strategic plan are also included in the portfolio.
Requirements: M. Div and ordination in The United Methodist Church required; knowledge of the ministry of pastoral care, chaplaincy, pastoral counseling and the variety of settings it occurs required; service and experience as a chaplain in the non-military community or pastoral counselor a must; experience working within complex institutional systems required; minimum four years office administration experience including supervision of staff required; knowledge of the United Methodist Church structure and polity; knowledge of the requirements for ordination and appointment of persons in extension ministry required; computer proficiency with Microsoft Office system; strong oral and written communication skills.
